Museum of Ethnography

The Museum of Ethnography is one of Budapest’s newest and architecturally most remarkable cultural institutions, which opened its new building in 2022 at the edge of City Park after relocating from Kossuth Square. The distinctive arched building was designed by NAPUR Architect, and is considered one of the most notable examples of contemporary museum architecture in Hungary.

A significant part of the exhibition spaces is placed beneath the building’s wave-like, hill-rising roof structure, while the green roof terrace open to the public functions as an urban park. The ornamental façade pattern draws from folk art motifs from around the world, referring to the museum’s rich collection of hundreds of thousands of objects.

Since opening, the new building has won numerous prestigious international architectural awards, and quickly became one of Budapest’s best-known contemporary architectural landmarks. Standing at the edge of City Park, it is both a modern cultural institution and a new defining cityscape element.
