A Budapest Images története - Bódis Krisztián | Budapest Images

The story

Budapest Images

Budapest Images did not begin as a consciously planned project.

In the evenings, after work, I wandered the city at the dawn of Budapest’s ruin-bar revolution, during a period when the city was visibly transforming.

At first, I photographed cityscapes, architectural details, and staircases. These images first appeared on the Budapest Images Facebook page and quickly reached a wider audience.

My work was first noticed by Szeretlek Magyarország, and later by We Love Budapest – this was the point when photography began to become more than a hobby.

Over time, this visual material gradually expanded to include street photography and human moments, followed later by drone imagery as well. The project kept growing continuously, while my interest in how urban space functions and changes remained constant throughout.

Today, Budapest Images is a continuously evolving visual archive of several thousand photographs, presenting Budapest not through a single era or point of view, but as a longer ongoing process.

Budapest Images is not the imprint of a single genre or period, but of a city itself — at once grand, worn, dramatic, and entirely everyday.

The photographer

Krisztian Bodis

I grew up on Akácfa Street, near Blaha Lujza Square, and still live nearby today in Terézváros, one of Budapest’s most characterful districts.

My original background is in structural engineering, and I first started photography during college, while on an Erasmus scholarship abroad. Returning home, I began to see Budapest – my home city – with completely new eyes.

I have now been working as a freelance photographer for more than 15 years. My main fields are architectural and event photography, alongside commercial and drone photography.

A technical way of thinking and a photojournalistic eye are both present in my work: spontaneous moments and carefully constructed geometric compositions complement one another throughout my images.

The concept

Budapest Images is the result of a long creative process.

It is not about a single subject, style, or era, but about a city itself – its layers, transformations, and continuities.

At its core lies an approach that demands constant attention and curiosity:

to find beauty in the greyness of everyday life,
and to reveal the unfamiliar faces of familiar places.

Publications and exhibitions

From billboard campaigns to office installations, my photographs of Budapest have appeared across countless formats and surfaces.

Among these, the books BPSPC: Budapest Street and Budapest (created together with Soós Bertalan) mark particularly important milestones in this journey – two radically different yet complementary photo albums about the same city.

Since 2020, Budapest Images has also functioned as a photographic archive within the city communication of the Budapest Municipality, appearing across various official platforms of the capital.

My architectural and city-focused photo series are regularly published by We Love Budapest.

Beyond Budapest, my photographs have also been exhibited in Sofia, Milan, Lima, and Bogotá.
