Nyugati (Western) Railway Station is one of Budapest’s most important transport hubs. The monumental station hall was completed in 1877 to the designs of Gustave Eiffel’s office. Its steel structure and vast glass surfaces make it one of Budapest’s outstanding examples of 19th-century industrial architecture.

The cast-iron hall and the historicist façade details create a striking contrast with the surrounding modern urban environment. In one of the station’s historic wings operates the famous McDonald’s interior often regarded as one of the world’s most beautiful fast-food spaces.

In front of the station stretches Nyugati Square, one of Budapest’s densest urban intersections, where the Grand Boulevard, Váci Road, and Bajcsy-Zsilinszky Road meet. The almost labyrinth-like underpass system is a characteristic stage of the city’s everyday pulse, while Eiffel Square behind the station, with its restaurants and terraces, has become one of the area’s lively meeting points.
