Small Boulevard
The Small Boulevard is one of the most important urban axes of downtown Budapest, stretching from Deák Ferenc Square to Fővám Square. It is not a single street name, but consists of several sections together: Károly Boulevard, Museum Boulevard, and Vámház Boulevard.
It took its present form in the second half of the 19th century, after the demolition of the city walls, following the former boundary line of historic Pest. Public transport also appeared on the boulevard at this time: the predecessors of today’s tram lines 47 and 49 have operated continuously since 1887. Its major nodes—Astoria, Kálvin Square, and Madách Square—remain important meeting points in the city center.
Along the Small Boulevard stand the Hungarian National Museum and several buildings of Eötvös Loránd University, as well as numerous historic apartment houses and commercial properties. It is one of the most frequently used downtown routes by visitors, linking the historic landmarks and university quarter to the Danube.
