Amphitheatre of Aquincum
The Aquincum Military Amphitheatre stands in Óbuda, in Budapest’s 3rd district, as one of the most remarkable remains of the former Roman military town of Aquincum.
Built in the 2nd century, around 145 AD, it served as an important communal space along the Pannonian frontier of the Roman Empire. Gladiatorial contests, military displays and public gatherings once animated the elliptical arena, whose massive stone walls and surviving traces of seating still convey the scale of its original presence.
The amphitheatre is not an isolated ruin, but a historical layer embedded within the urban fabric of Óbuda. Its openness still allows it to function as an active community space today, where the past and present of the city continue to meet.
