Biodome
The amoeba-shaped Biodome in City Park, within the grounds of the Budapest Zoo and Botanical Garden, is one of Budapest’s most striking contemporary architectural complexes.
Construction began in 2017, and the long-troubled project was originally intended to present the aquatic and terrestrial wildlife of the ancient Pannonian Sea, which covered the Carpathian Basin around 20 million years ago. However, this concept has remained unrealized to this day.
Today, the Biodome primarily serves as a venue for contemporary art exhibitions and temporary cultural events.
Its bold architectural language stands in sharp contrast to the surrounding historic urban fabric. The raw concrete elements, the alternating transparent and enclosed surfaces, and the monumental interior volumes distinctly separate the Biodome from the historical layers of City Park.
