Dohány Street Synagogue
The Dohány Street Synagogue is one of Budapest’s most important religious and historical buildings, and the largest synagogue in Europe.
The building was constructed between 1854 and 1859, to the designs of Ludwig Förster, with a distinctive Moorish-style façade.
Its history is deeply intertwined with Budapest’s religious and social past: during the Second World War, the surrounding area formed part of the Pest ghetto, and the building itself became a witness to profound historical events.
Today the synagogue remains one of the centers of Budapest’s Jewish community, continuing to function as an active religious space.
