Erzsébet Square

Erzsébet Square is one of the liveliest meeting points in downtown Budapest, where green space, city traffic and the world of evening hangouts coexist side by side. The square is both a place to rest and a point of departure: young people gather here to talk and drink before heading into the night.

The history of the square is especially unique. In the 1990s, construction of the new National Theatre began here, but the project was abandoned, leaving the famous “pit” in the middle of downtown for years. This later evolved into Akvárium Klub, formerly Gödör Club, one of the city’s most popular concert and nightlife venues.

Today Erzsébet Square remains a defining place for multiple generations. People sitting in the grass, skaters practising in the skatepark, visitors around the Budapest Eye ferris wheel and the Danubius Fountain, and conversations unfolding across the terraces together shape the character of the square.

The photographs observe this changing yet recurring life: daytime rest, evening energy and the square’s enduring role in Budapest’s everyday urban rhythm.
