Ferenciek Square
erenciek Square is one of Budapest’s densest historic crossroads, where the medieval-origin Downtown Franciscan Church, the Art Nouveau Párisi Udvar, and the Klotild Palaces together define the square’s character. Váci Street crosses the inner city here, making the area a constantly busy point for both visitors and locals passing through.
Nearby once stood the legendary Pilvax Café, where the events of the 1848 Revolution began to unfold, while the still-operating Central Café remained an important literary meeting place in the 20th century. Just a few steps away stands the ELTE University Library and Archives, which has been part of Budapest’s academic life for centuries.
Ferenciek Square is therefore simultaneously a historical memorial site, an architectural landmark, and a constant stage of downtown urban flow.
