Margaret Island
Margaret Island lies in the heart of Budapest as a park in the middle of the Danube and one of the city’s most popular places for recreation and relaxation. In the Middle Ages it was under royal and ecclesiastical ownership and was then known as Rabbit Island. According to legend, Saint Margaret of the Árpád dynasty lived here, from whom the island takes its name.
Today the area is woven through with parks and promenades, while the island is also one of the centers of urban sport—with the famous island running track. Its main attractions include the musical fountain, the Japanese garden, the medieval monastery ruins, and the open-air concert venue. The turn-of-the-century water tower, the Palatinus Strand Baths, and the Alfréd Hajós National Swimming Stadium are among the most popular summer destinations.
Accessible from both Margaret Bridge and Árpád Bridge, the island is not only a refuge from the city’s noise, but also Budapest’s green heart—a shared space for relaxation, sport, and historical memory.
