National Theatre

The National Theatre is one of the most important institutions of Hungarian theatre culture, inaugurated in 2002 to the designs of Mária Siklós.

After the demolition of the former National Theatre at Blaha Lujza Square, the institution searched for a new home for a long time, before the current building was finally constructed on the Danube embankment at the Pest bridgehead of Rákóczi Bridge.

Today’s National Theatre is distinguished by its ship-shaped building, while the surrounding park has become one of the area’s characteristic cultural spaces. The garden, articulated with sculptures and promenades, together with the proximity of the Danube and the evening illumination, gives the district a unique atmosphere.
