Széll Kálmán Square
Széll Kálmán Square is one of the busiest transport hubs on the Buda side of Budapest. For many years it was known as Moscow Square, before regaining its original name in 2011 after Kálmán Széll, former Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Hungary.
In the 19th century, a clay pit operated on the site. After mining ended, a huge depression remained in the area, giving rise to the old nickname “The Pit.” In summer it was often used as a football field, while in winter it served as an ice rink, before later being filled in and turned into sports grounds.
The former Post Palace, now home to the Hungarian Money Museum, and the fan-shaped metro entrance at the center of the square are its most characteristic structures. The latter was built in 1972 and leads to the M2 station via Budapest’s longest escalator.
Following its 2015–2016 reconstruction, the square was renewed with modern paving, pavilions, and pedestrian zones. The clock standing here has long been one of Budapest’s favorite meeting points.
