Szimpla Kert
Szimpla Kert is one of Budapest’s most famous ruin bars, located in Kazinczy Street in District VII. The venue opened in the early 2000s and became one of the first and best-known representatives of Budapest’s ruin bar culture, playing a key role in transforming the city center’s nightlife.
The essence of ruin bars lay in the reuse of abandoned or semi-ruined inner-city buildings. The courtyard and rooms of Szimpla are filled with unique furniture, old objects, graffiti, and installations, giving the place a constantly changing, eclectic exhibition-like atmosphere.
Over the years, Szimpla has also evolved into a cultural space: it hosts concerts, exhibitions, flea markets, and Sunday farmers’ markets. Today it is one of Budapest’s most visited attractions and a symbol of the city’s alternative urban culture.
