Tabán
Tabán is one of Budapest’s most distinctive districts, lying between Castle Hill and Gellért Hill. The hillside, now shaped by parks and promenades, was once a densely built quarter filled with winding streets and small houses with an almost Mediterranean atmosphere.
In the 18th and 19th centuries, the area was especially lively, with taverns, wine gardens, and small inns making it a favorite meeting place for Buda’s citizens and artists. The mood of Tabán inspired numerous paintings, literary works, and urban legends.
Much of the historic quarter was demolished in the 1930s, and today its place is taken by green slopes and parkland. Tabán remains a beloved place for walks and relaxation, with beautiful views toward Buda Castle, Gellért Hill, and the Danube.
